It's a chilling thought for any business executive, as it implies that the technological capabilities of a single company, TSMC, are supporting the very security of a nation.

To be honest, at first I thought, "This is a topic on a completely different scale." As someone who runs a mid-sized branding agency in Nagoya, national security issues seem too far removed from my own experience. But as I thought about it, I realized that this isn't a matter of scale, but a structural one. Just as Taiwan built its survival strategy by becoming irreplaceable, we've entered an era where companies cannot survive unless they possess something irreplaceable. Especially now, with AI raising the bar for the "minimum quality" of all tasks, I feel this question has become unavoidable for business leaders.

What is "Silicon Shield"? — A deterrent of irreplaceability

The concept of a silicon shield suggests that Taiwan's dominance of the global semiconductor (silicon) manufacturing hub forces other countries to rely on its supply chain, thereby acting as a deterrent against military intervention. This concept was reportedly proposed in a book by journalist Craig Addison in 2001. TSMC founder Morris Chang moved to Taiwan at the age of 55 and staked everything on a business model that was considered unconventional globally at the time: a "foundry-only" business model. This meant not producing any of his own branded products, but focusing solely on manufacturing designs for other companies. This "single-minded" choice ultimately created a technological advantage that no one else could imitate, and boosted the very value of Taiwan as a nation.

What's important here is that the Silicon Shield wasn't created simply because of its size. Taiwan is by no means a great power. Rather, it's a small island nation that has always been under geopolitical threat. Nevertheless, by concentrating its resources on a single irreplaceable point, it has gained a position where it can compete on equal footing, or even better, with great powers. I believe this is an extremely insightful story for small and medium-sized enterprises that cannot compete on scale.

What AI is destroying is not "expertise," but "information asymmetry."

In recent years, I've noticed a dramatic increase in the minimum quality standards for all kinds of work due to the proliferation of AI. In the world of design, for example, I've increasingly seen AI-generated designs and thought, "I could do something like that myself." It's not like advanced technology is being used, yet it can produce something of that quality in just a few minutes. Even checking for typos and grammatical errors in text is now done more accurately by AI than by humans, and at an overwhelmingly faster pace.

What I find particularly symbolic is the change in the consulting industry. When AI first emerged, people said that "consultants will lose their jobs." In reality, the consulting industry itself hasn't disappeared. On the contrary, the need to support the use of AI has increased. However, the traditional value proposition of gathering industry information, narrowing down issues, and compiling them into reports with quantitative evidence is definitely becoming less profitable. This is because clients can now obtain the information they want, in the format they want, and at the time they want. The advantage of "having information" itself is crumbling. I see this as a structural change that is happening in all industries, whether it's design or consulting.

Even with the increasing adoption of generative AI, some surveys show that nearly 60% to 70% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are still not fully utilizing AI in their operations. While adoption is progressing mainly in large corporations, the reality is that many workplaces are "interested but not able to use it effectively." However, I believe this figure also represents a great opportunity. The gap between the few companies that can quickly acquire information and the vast majority that continue to do things the same way will widen rapidly from now on. Right now, we are just one step away from making that gap visible.

That's why I believe that future expertise lies not in "possessing information," but in "the ability to break the mold." We've entered an era where AI can create things with a general format. But the judgment to break that mold and infuse it with unique individuality and context remains something only humans can do. The quality of judgment in which direction to break the mold will be what determines the value of experts in the future.

Reflections after witnessing "irreversible change" for a quarter of a century

I've been in the advertising industry for over a quarter of a century. Looking back, this industry has always been a continuous series of "irreversible changes." When I first entered the industry, the job of phototypesetting had already disappeared, and digital production using Illustrator and Photoshop was commonplace. It was an era when data was burned onto MO or CDs and sent to printing companies by courier. Eventually, this changed to online submission, and the need to send storage media and workflows that relied on postal schedules became fundamentally unnecessary.

With each change, I've seen people lose the meaning of their previous skill sets. The advent of mobile phones, the spread of the internet, the penetration of cloud services—all of these were irreversible. I believe that AI is heading in exactly the same direction. The only difference is the speed and scale. I often describe it as "like climbing a downward escalator," but with AI, I feel that the speed at which that escalator is descending has become something else entirely. Those who stand still will be left behind in no time.

What's important here, I believe, is not to fear change itself, but to re-examine "what are we selling to society?" with each change. The reason phototypesetters were able to transition to digital production is because they didn't abandon the essential value of "creating beautiful printed materials." Even if the technology changes, as long as we don't misframe the questions, the value will remain, albeit in a different form. This should remain true even with the current wave of AI.

So, what is our company's "silicon"? — How to create irreplaceable products.

Based on everything discussed so far, the question I keep asking myself as a business leader is, "What does silicon mean to our company?" Just as TSMC focused all its resources on "manufacturing only," irreplaceability doesn't come from being able to do everything. Rather, it comes from deciding what to let go of.

In our case, what we honed over many years in the branding field was the "quality of our listening." About 20 years ago, when I was working as a designer, I often didn't need to present multiple options like Option A and Option B; a single proposal was often adopted as is. At the time, I didn't really understand why, but later, when I analyzed my own work for my business school graduation thesis, I realized that the decisive difference lay not in my design skills, but in whether or not I could accurately understand the client's objectives and current situation. If you can accurately understand the current situation, the problems will naturally emerge, and the solutions will naturally follow. This is not a special talent, but something that can be articulated as a reproducible process.

Now that AI can create something that "looks the part" in minutes, I feel that the value of the process of "accurately grasping the objective and current position before breaking the mold" has actually increased. While the value of information gathering and creating a polished appearance may diminish, the human eye to discern what the essential problem is and how to break the mold is difficult for AI to replace. This is not limited to our industry. In manufacturing, it might be "we can run this process with a precision that other companies cannot imitate," or in the service industry, it might be "we want to rely on that company for this particular situation." I believe that what is important is not scale or name recognition, but how concretely you can articulate that irreplaceable point.

In summary, questioning the "shield" is questioning its very existence.

Taiwan's Silicon Shield was by no means born out of a peaceful choice. It was the result of a desperate strategy for survival. I believe the same is true for irreplaceability in a company. It's not something you consider when you have the luxury of doing so; rather, it's something that is only truly articulated when you feel a sense of crisis, a feeling that "if we continue like this, we will be buried."

With AI raising the bar for minimum quality and rapidly rendering some of what was once considered expertise worthless, this may be an unsettling time for many business leaders. However, looking at it from a different perspective, there are few other opportunities to seriously re-examine "what is the purpose of our company's existence?" What does silicon mean to our company? How concretely can we answer that question? I believe that continuously confronting this question is the very essence of management in the coming era.

I don't think I've fully answered this question myself. Rather, as a business owner, I'm still in the process of comparing answers with my customers. But one thing I can say is that this question becomes much clearer and more concrete when you incorporate external perspectives and try to articulate it, rather than trying to think about it alone.

If you feel that you haven't yet articulated what "silicon" means to your company, then finding a trustworthy partner to brainstorm with and explore that concept together might be a good option. And we believe that being chosen as your partner will serve as our own "silicone shield."

[31
49,57,63,64,69
post-2488","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-management","tag-business-administration","tag-lhmethod","tag-63","tag-ai","tag-69
["GET
